The estancia Harberton is the oldest ranch of Tierra del Fuego, situated in the east, 90km away from Ushuaia. This estancia belongs to the descendants of Rev. Thomas Bridges, one of the first British missionaries reaching the area. Leaving Ushuaia towards the North, along the foothill of the imposing mount Olivia, you cross the Carajal valley. It is the largest peat bog of the island. Further on you cross the winter holiday stations Altos del Valle, Valle de Los Huskies, Refugio Nunatak, Tierra Mayor, and the complex Cerro Castor. The way continues through marvelous vegetation, peat bogs, lagoons, and rivers. After 30km of twisty road you reach Puerto Almanza, from where you drive along the coast of the Beagle channel with amazing views over its deep blue water and the Chilean Navarion island and Puerto Williams in front. Later you drive across undulated pampas, with the characteristical tousled trees, product of the constant southern winds. Across some rivers and some dry riverbeds, you reach the estancia Harberton. The principal buildings are located on a protected bay. The main building is conserved in the original style, a wooden construction, covered by sheet. An outstanding garden gathers the major species of the regional vegetation. On a walk along the property, you get explanations about the current and the past rural activities. Before leaving towards Ushuaia, you enjoy a nice cup of tea and homemade cookies.
