Routes through valleys

El Chaltén is the capital of trekking in Argentina, in one of the most beautiful natural paradises of South America. As it is located directly in the national park Los Glaciares, untouched nature and breathtaking mountain peaks surround it, and great outdoor activities start right away from the hotel door. The up to 3,400m high icy granite needles of the mount Fitz Roy dominate the region. For mountain climbers it offers the most challenging routes, with the highest degree of difficulties.

On this trekking tour, you go up to the Fitz Roy base camp and the lagoon de los Tres at the foothills of mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Princeton and some smaller needles of the granite giant. Leaving El Chaltén on a trail in the woods you arrive, after a while, to a point with a panoramic view over the valley of the river de las Vueltas. The next part is a bit flatter and you come along the lagoon Capri, crossing lenga woods, the Blanco river and different panoramic viewpoints. On this part, you will also have the first sight of the impressive wall of mount Fitz Roy. After four hours walking, (difficulty degree, easy) you arrive to camp Poincenot.

From here, the trail goes 400m up to the lagoon de los Tres (difficulty degree, medium). The trail ends at an older moraine and you will have a wonderful view over the lagoon and the glacier. This is also the closest view of the wall of mount Fitz Roy and its neighbouring granite needles. Along the shore of the emerald green lagoon, you can walk to the lagoon Sucia and admire the hanging glaciers. For people who want to experiment more adventure, there are possibilities to stay overnight at camp Poincenot and make the last 400m up to the lagoon de los Tres early in the morning, awaiting the first golden beams of the rising sun. You get back to El Chaltén through the same way down.
