 Ride towards the Andes
 Andean valleys
 Natural stone bridge
|
One of Argentina's most striking natural wonders is a natural stone bridge over the Mendoza river, which is 177km away from the city of Mendoza. The transfer leaves Mendoza and drives towards the Andean mountain chain in the west, all along the Mendoza river. During pre-Colombian times and during the colony time, this was the main road to Santiago de Chile. On the way you will visit different interesting spots such as the Potrerillos valley, the Uspallata valley, which has been an important ski resort and metallurgical site since pre-Columbian times, and old Indian ruins in Ranchillos. From Puente Vacas onwards, you will enjoy marvellous views of the volcano Tupungato and mount Aconcagua. Puente Vacas is also the starting point for trekkers and climbers, who want to conquer mount Aconcagua. With its 6,960m, it is the highest mountain in America. The snow-covered volcano Tupungato (6,650m) is even more challenging for climbers than mount Aconcagua. The road continues and you cross another important ski resort, Los Penintentes. From there, it is not far to Puente del Inca, which lies at 2,720m above sea level. The natural monument is also famous for its hot springs. There is a hotel nearby. You will reach Las Cuevas 10km from Puente del Inca. From there the Chilean capital, Santiago de Chile, is not far. The excursion ends at the border and returns to Mendoza. |
