Buenos Aires, the metropolis, is said to be the Paris of South America. First-time visitors will recognize this easily, just looking at its architecture. Above all, the downtown area and the May Avenue (Avenida de Mayo) are testimonies of its glorious past. This walking tour is deemed to give the visitor a first impression of the city. The tour starts at the Opera House Colón. This splendid theatre was built in 1908, when Buenos Aires was amongst the richest cities in the world. During the one-hour visit of the theatre, you will see the opulent audience hall with the main stage and the workshops on the underground (though the workshops cannot be visited nowadays for they are being refurbished). Afterwards, we walk along typical avenues, squares, and streets to the Parliament building. The Congreso was inspired by the Capitol of Washington. From there, we take Avenida de Mayo which shows the splendour of the beginning of the 20th century. The European-style buildings along the avenue were restored for the 500-year anniversary of the discovery of America. Further on, we walk to May Square (Plaza de Mayo), in front of the Government House (Casa Rosada). The Cathedral and the City Hall are on the left of the square. This square is famous, due to the activities of the Mothers of May Square (Madres de Plaza de Mayo), who still demonstrate in silence in order to remember the victims of the last military dictatorship, every Thursday afternoon. The tour continues with a walk along the pedestrian area of Florida Street. This shopping and business street is 1.5km long and full of busy life. At San Martín Square (Plaza San Martin), a marvelous green area with monuments and old trees, the walking sightseeing tour ends. |
