Towards the Tronador

Río Manso

Ventisquero Negro Glacier

This unique excursion shows you the most breathtaking places of the Nahuel Huapi National Park.

You will visit lakes, beaches, mountains and waterfalls and admire the highest mountain in the region, Cerro Tronador (3478 metres high). It is an extinct stratovolcano in the southern Andes, located along the border between Argentina and Chile near the city of Bariloche. The mountain was named Tronador (Spanish for Thunderer) by locals, in reference to the sound of falling seracs.

Crossing the Manso River you reach Pampa Linda where you have the best view of the Tronador.

You continue to Ventisquero Negro ("black snowdrift" in Spanish). It is a rather unique glacier at the base of the Tronador. The unusual dark brown colour of this glacier comes from dirt and sediment collected during its accumulation process. It is fed by the Río Manso glacier several hundred metres higher up the mountain. Brown icebergs calve from the glacier and then float in a small lake until eventually melting.

Later on you see the Saltillo de las Nalcas, a hidden waterfall in the middle of the forest.
